Stephen Hawking issues MAJOR warning: 'Start looking for an alternative planet NOW'

Speaking at the Starmus Festival, an event “born to celebrate science and the arts” according to its website, headquarters in London, Professor Hawking said humans should begin looking for elsewhere to live as we are “running out of space on Earth”.

The 75-year old told an audience: “I strongly believe that we will start seeking alternative planets for suitable habitation.

“We are running out of space on Earth and we need to breakthrough the technological limitations, preventing us from living elsewhere in the universe.

“I am not alone in this view.”

The theoretical physicist opened his speech by touching on the media frenzy that has surrounded him over the last month after he predicted that humanity will have to escape Earth within a century if our species is to have any chance of surviving.

The astrophysicist will claim as part of a TV show that humans must move and colonise another planet during the 22nd century.

Professor Hawking cites the likes of global warming, nuclear war or asteroid strikes as some of the reasons which could spell humanity’s end.

The prediction from Hawking is smaller than what he has previously believed.

In November last year, the astrophysicist said he believes humans have 1,000 years left on the planet.

Professor Hawking said: “Perhaps one day we will be able to use gravitational waves to look back into the heart of the Big Bang.

“Most recent advances in cosmology have been achieved from space where there are uninterrupted views of our universe but we must also continue to go into space for the future of humanity.

“I don’t think we will survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet.”
